Nwannem | Signed Limited Edition African Art Print
A signed, numbered limited edition print of Nwannem, a pastel and charcoal portrait of two siblings by Chinemelu Ofoma. Unframed, 42 x 60cm. Nwanne is Igbo for sibling. The literal sense is child of my mother, and nwanne m is my sibling. That is the whole picture: an older child holding a younger one, both wrapped into the same length of cloth, one looking at something outside the frame and the other looking straight at you. The original was worked in pastel and charcoal against a black ground, which is why the skin carries so much light. Ofoma builds the faces up in layers and leaves the wax print cloth loose and painterly underneath, so the two children are the only sharp thing in the picture and everything else falls away. The original sold in February 2020 and is in a private collection. This print is the only way the image is still available. It is one of a limited edition of 50, each print signed and numbered by the artist. Once the fifty are gone the edition closes and no more are made. Supplied unframed at 42 x 60cm, which is standard A2, so it fits an off the shelf frame without a trip to a framer. The second photograph shows the image framed on a wall, to give you the scale in a real room. It suits a hallway, a landing, a child's room, or anywhere a house needs a face in it. It reads as African without being decorative about it, which is not easy to find in a print at this size and price. Care: keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades pigment prints over time, and frame it behind glass rather than leaving it open to the air. Handle the sheet by the edges before it is framed.

Carriers of the Day Screen Print
Carriers of the Day Screen Print, a hand-pulled 35 x 55 cm African art print. Carriers of the Day captures a fleeting moment of collective movement, figures pressed forward by time, weight, and purpose. Rendered through layered screen printing, the work blurs individuality in favor of shared experience, emphasizing rhythm, repetition, and resilience. The softened forms and vibrant yet weathered palette suggest memory in motion, lives intersecting briefly before continuing onward. What is carried is not only physical load, but history, responsibility, and quiet determination. This piece speaks to dignity within labor and the unseen poetry of everyday journeys. Each hand-pulled print carries subtle variations, reinforcing the uniqueness of every path taken. Hand-pulled screen print on archival paper 35 × 55 cm Amusan Joshua 2024

Beaded Africa Map Wall Art, Four African Flags, Ghana
A hand carved Africa map in sese wood, beaded by hand with four African national flags filling the whole continent, edged in black beads. The flags in the photograph are Ghana with its black star, Chad, Nigeria and Tanzania, beaded across the map rather than pinned to their own countries. It is the busiest piece in this maker's range and the one that works as a talking point in a family room or an office, where the single colour maps are quieter. There is a lot to look at up close, so hang it where people stand rather than high on a stairwell. The continent is cut from sese wood, a light Ghanaian hardwood that carvers also use for drums, then filled bead by bead in seven colours, with a black bead border following the coastline. This one has no cowrie shells. The back is left as plain stained wood with a hanging hook fitted, so it goes straight onto a nail or a picture hook with nothing else needed. It measures about 28cm tall and 21cm wide. Dust it with a dry soft brush or a cloth. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades glass beads over time, and off a damp wall.

The Lost Art | African Girl with Braids Portrait Painting
The lost art. "In my niece's world, life is less about perfection and more about presence." One day my niece stood in front of one of my paintings. Unlike most adults, she never asked about the inspiration, the meaning or the technique. She was simply captivated by the colour. For her, that was enough. That is the art we lose on the way to becoming adults. The ability to look at something and let it be beautiful without first demanding that it explain itself. This portrait is painted for that kind of looking. Her face is built from hand painted blocks of pink and violet, a pixel mosaic that only settles into a girl once you step back. The Last Time It Felt Like Home, Painting
The last time it felt like home. Childhood was the last time life felt like home, a place safe enough to exist in without pretending. This piece is my quiet grief for growing older. I watched myself change, leaving fragments of my childhood behind with each passing day while carrying the ache of everything I was becoming. It caught me in the middle of a lifelong search for the emotional home we unknowingly left behind. A place where we once felt whole, safe, and free enough to simply exist. Her face is built from hand painted blocks of coral and blue, a pixel mosaic that only settles into a girl once you step back. Sweet Like Wine Impasto Portrait
"Sweet Like Wine" is a portrait that celebrates African beauty through wisdom, resilience and grace. It depicts an elderly African woman in a blue headwrap, resting her chin on her hands with a calm, reflective expression. Bold, textured strokes and vibrant colours symbolize the richness of her life and identity. The title suggests that, like fine wine, true beauty grows deeper and more valuable with age, honouring the dignity and timeless elegance of African women.

Poise Geometric Acrylic Painting
Poise is an original acrylic on canvas painting by Victor Ubabike, a Nigerian contemporary artist widely recognised for his practice of Geometric Figurative Expressionism. Completed in 2023, this large-scale figurative work measures 91.44 × 106.68 cm (approximately 36 × 42 inches) and is sold unframed. The painting is less about posture and more about restraint: the mastery of tension held in stillness. Ubabike's signature approach of reducing the human form to bold geometric planes and muted, considered colour creates a composition that radiates quiet gravity. There is a controlled power in the figure's stance: nothing is excessive, everything is deliberate. "Poise" becomes a meditation on inner equilibrium and the strength found in stillness. This is a compelling work for collectors of African contemporary art, figurative painting, and expressive fine art. It represents over two decades of Ubabike's practice, from Impressionism through abstraction to his current Geometric Figurative Expressionist voice, shaped by a rigorous formal training at Auchi Polytechnic and years of international exhibition. - Original, one-of-a-kind artwork - Medium: Acrylic on canvas - Dimensions: 91.44 × 106.68 cm (36 × 42 in) - Year: 2023 - Sold unframed - Artist: Victor Ubabike (b. 1982, Auchi, Edo State, Nigeria)

Malcolm X A3 Black History Print
Malcolm X A3 Black History Print, an illustrated portrait poster on fine paper. Malcolm X: The Truth That Still Burns Malcolm X was not just an activist. He was an armed conscience, a voice rising from the flames, a man born in pain and killed for daring to name the evil. Raised in the storms of segregated America, he saw his father murdered, his mother broken, and his youth stolen. In prison, he reinvented himself. Not to beg for a seat at the table, but to flip the entire table over. From the Nation of Islam to Mecca, he never stopped growing, unlearning, and searching for absolute justice. He spoke out loud what the oppressed only whispered: *by any means necessary*. Not out of hatred, out of necessity. Because turning the other cheek when your house is being burned down isn't virtue, it's cowardice. While others talked about integration, Malcolm talked about dignity. While microphones were being held out to him, traps were being set. He never backed down. Even when he knew death was lurking. Unfortunately, the bullets caught up with him on February 21, 1965, in Harlem, in front of his wife and daughters. He never saw the end of American apartheid. He never saw a Black president in the White House. But what he planted in people's minds, the refusal to bend, an indestructible self-respect, doesn't need a grave to live on. Malcolm X is not dead. They only killed his body. But his words have never laid down their arms.

Figures of Unity Acrylic Painting
An original acrylic painting on canvas of five figures, signed Lexis. Five tall, faceless figures stand shoulder to shoulder, each balancing a bowl on the head, painted in turquoise, gold, crimson and deep indigo. They are built from loose vertical strokes that run down into the background, so the group reads as one moving line rather than five separate people, and the close detail photograph shows the paint laid on thickly in places with the brush marks left in. At 10 by 14 inches it is a small painting, sized for a narrow wall, a shelf or a group of smaller works. If you like the palette, the artist's other small figure paintings in the shop are painted in the same colours and hang well together. Painted by hand in Accra, Ghana. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from damp.

Fresh African Songs | Original Acrylic Painting, 18x26in
An original acrylic painting on canvas, 18 by 26 inches, of a musician playing the goje, the one string fiddle of northern Ghana, in magenta, green and gold. The player sits behind his instrument with his eyes closed and his mouth open in song, the gourd bowl of the fiddle swinging round in the foreground and the bow laid across it. The artist writes the instrument's name as goji. Everything is broken into loose vertical strokes of colour, so the man, the fiddle and the room seem to dissolve into the sound, and a row of pink flower forms along the bottom edge carries the freshness of the title. At 18 by 26 inches it is a good size for a living room or a study wall where one painting has to carry the room. If you want music in quieter colour, the artist's flute player painting, The Masterpiece, is the calmer piece; this one is for a wall that can take full saturation. Painted by hand in acrylic on canvas and signed Lexis in the lower right. The artist says it is shipped rolled in a tube. Keep it out of direct sunlight and dust with a soft dry brush.

Silent Elegance | Original Acrylic Painting, 10x14in
An original acrylic painting on canvas of a woman seen from behind, in turquoise, gold, violet and deep earth tones, signed Lexis in the lower right. She stands turned away from the viewer, so there is no face to read, only the line of her back, a gold hoop earring, gold bands on her arm and a string of white beads at her waist. The background is laid in loose vertical strokes of colour that she seems to step out of, and the close detail photograph shows how thickly the paint sits in places, with the canvas weave showing through where it is thin. At 10 by 14 inches it is a small painting, sized for a narrow wall, a shelf or a group of smaller works rather than a single large space. If you want the same palette with more going on, the artist's larger figure paintings sit alongside it in the shop. Painted by hand in Accra, Ghana. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from damp.

Guardians of Kilimanjaro Painting
Guardians of Kilimanjaro is a large original acrylic painting on canvas, 137 x 150cm, of two Maasai elders in red shukas looking out over tall grass towards Mount Kilimanjaro. The elders are seen from behind, one wrapped in a checked shuka and the other in a sleeveless red cloth with a pale belt, each resting on a staff. The mountain sits pale and snow capped above them, and the grass in the foreground is painted blade by blade, close enough that it frames the two men rather than sitting behind them. It belongs to the artist's Heritage Series, about the people who keep a culture's identity, land and knowledge. This is a one of a kind original, not a print. It is painted by Kamanzi in a studio in Arusha, Tanzania, signed Kamanzi Artlife in the lower right corner, and comes with the artist's certificate of authenticity. At 137cm wide and 150cm high (about 54 x 59 inches) it is a statement piece for a large wall: a living room, an office reception, or a hallway with room to step back from it. The canvas is shipped rolled in a tube and unstretched, so plan to have it stretched or framed when it arrives. The artist is also open to commissions.

Zebra Stripe Beaded Wall Mask, Black and White, Ghana
A round hand carved sese wood wall mask, about 15cm across, beaded in black and white stripes with open slit eyes, a carved mouth and a rim of natural cowrie shells. It is the only one of the maker's masks worked in black and white alone, so it suits a monochrome room or a gallery wall where colour would compete. The stripes curve around the eyes and the brow like a zebra's markings, and the cowries around the rim soften the edge. The maker carves the face in Accra and stitches the glass seed beads on one at a time, which takes a day or two per mask. The back is carved hollow and fitted with a hanging plate and cord, shown in the second photograph. Cowrie shells were used as money across much of West Africa, and they still carry that sense of wealth and good fortune. If you want colour, the maker's Gye Nyame mask pairs red and green beadwork with the same cowrie rim.

Brushstrokes #1 | Original Abstract Watercolour on Fabric
Brushstrokes #1 is a small original abstract in watercolour on fabric, 5.3 by 6.7 inches, signed Moses Wainaina and made in Kenya. It is the first piece in an ongoing series exploring geometry through painting. Nested rectangles of indigo blue and dark brown are dragged across a pale ground, and because the paint sits on cloth rather than paper, every stroke catches on the weave and the texture of the fabric shows through. The artist calls the approach abstrart. At this size it suits a shelf, a desk or a narrow stretch of wall, the places a large canvas cannot go. A note from the artist for collectors: as the first piece in the series, the buyer may keep the title Brushstrokes #1 or give it an official second title, which the artist records on the signed certificate of authenticity supplied with the work. Watercolour on fabric, 5.3 x 6.7 inches (about 13.5 x 17cm).

Beaded Africa Map Wall Art, Pan African Flag Colours
A hand carved Africa map in sese wood, beaded in the red, black and green of the Pan African flag, with a full border of real cowrie shells. The three bands run across the continent rather than sitting beside it, so the flag and the map are one object instead of a flag with a map on top. That makes it the piece in this maker's range to choose if you want the meaning to carry from across the room, and the cowrie border gives it enough depth to work in a hallway you pass closely as well. The continent is cut from sese wood, a light Ghanaian hardwood that carvers also use for drums, then beaded bead by bead in three blocks of red, black and green. Whole cowrie shells are set one by one around the entire coastline.

The Masterpiece | Original Flute Player Painting, 22x30in
The Masterpiece is an original acrylic painting on canvas, 22 by 30 inches, showing a flute player mid tune in reds, oranges, yellows, blue and violet. The musician stands with his eyes closed and the flute raised, and the whole surface moves with him. Bold strokes and fragmented geometric shapes break across the figure and the background alike, so the colours seem to answer the melody rather than sit quietly behind it. His striped tunic and tall patterned hat carry the strongest reds in the work, and the flute runs through the centre of it. This is the canvas itself, not a print or a reproduction. It is signed Lexis in the lower right corner and there is only one of it. The close photograph shows the brush texture and the small ridges of paint across the surface, which is the part a print can never give you. At 22 by 30 inches, roughly 56 by 76cm, it is large enough to hold a wall on its own and it suits a contemporary room, a music room or a studio. Painted in acrylic on canvas. Keep it out of direct sunlight, dust it gently with a dry soft brush or cloth, and never use cleaning fluid on the paint.

Interwoven, Abstract Painting
Interwoven belongs to Victor Ubabike's ongoing scarf series. Across that series one elongated scarf keeps returning, and it carries the meaning of the work. It stands for identity, and it takes a different shape on every canvas it appears on. Here it doubles back through itself, which is where the painting gets its name. The surface is built up in layers of acrylic, in the flat planes and hard edges of the style he calls Geometric Figurative Expressionism. Colour does structural work rather than decorative work. The blocks sit against each other instead of blending, and the painting holds together the way a mosaic does. At 96 by 107 cm it takes a wall on its own. Four Friends | Signed Limited Edition African Art Print
A signed limited edition print of Four Friends, an oil on canvas by the Lagos artist Chinemelu Ofoma. Four figures on a gold ground, unframed at 30 x 42cm. Four dark figures stand shoulder to shoulder, close enough that the arms of the outer two fall across the backs of the ones beside them. One wears a wide brimmed hat. They are painted almost as silhouettes, in thick black and brown strokes worked over a field of ochre and gold, with small birds scattered through the upper half of the picture. No faces are given, so what the painting carries is the posture of four people standing together, which is the whole of the title. The ground is where the oil paint is doing the most work. It is laid on in broad horizontal drags so the gold shifts between warm and pale across the canvas, and flecks of red and orange come through from underneath. Against that, the figures read as solid shapes cut out of the light. This is one of a limited edition of 100 prints on paper, each signed by the artist. It is supplied unframed at 30 x 42cm, which is standard A3, so it takes an off the shelf frame without a trip to a framer. It wants a wall with some room around it, since the four figures read as a group and crowding them with other pictures works against the subject. If you are after something quieter for a small wall, the same artist's My Baby print is two figures instead of four, and Nwannem is the larger A2 sheet. Care: keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades print pigment over time, and frame it behind glass rather than leaving the sheet open to the air. Handle it by the edges until it is framed.

Beaded Africa Map Wall Art, Red and White, Cowrie Shells
A hand carved Africa map in sese wood, covered in deep red glass seed beads, with Greek letters in white and a full border of real cowrie shells. This is the only map in the maker's lettered range with a shell border, and it is the reason to choose it. The cowries stand proud of the beadwork all the way round, so the piece has real depth and throws a shadow on the wall, where the flat beaded maps read more like a print. It suits a wall you walk past closely, a landing or an alcove, rather than one you only ever see from the far side of a room. The continent is cut from sese wood, a light Ghanaian hardwood that carvers also use for drums, then covered bead by bead in red with the lettering worked in white. Whole cowrie shells are set one by one around the entire coastline. Happy Mothers | Original Acrylic Dance Painting, 22x30in
Happy Mothers is an original acrylic painting on canvas, 22 by 30 inches, showing a group of women dancing and drumming across a deep pink ground. The women wear tall cylindrical hats and sleeveless dresses in red, cream and teal, and several of them carry hand drums. Their legs taper to fine points, so the whole line of figures looks as though it is lifting off the floor at the same moment. The background is worked in the same reds and blues as the dresses, which keeps the eye moving along the row rather than settling on any one dancer. This is the canvas itself, not a print or a reproduction. It is signed Lexis and dated 2018 in the lower right corner and there is only one of it. The second photograph is a close view of three of the dancers, where the weave of the canvas and the brush texture are clearly visible. At 22 by 30 inches, roughly 56 by 76cm, it is large enough to carry a wall on its own and it suits a living room, a dining room or a hallway that needs warmth. Painted in acrylic on canvas. Keep it out of direct sunlight, dust it gently with a dry soft cloth, and never use cleaning fluid on the paint.

Deva | Original 3D Fabric Fish Wall Art, 61 x 81cm
A fish worked in white chiffon and gold sequins, standing clear of a hand textured white board with a gold painted edge, 61cm wide and 81cm long. This is not a print. The fins and tail are cut from chiffon and shaped so they lift away from the board and cast their own shadow, and the largest of them reach out past the gold painted edge, so the fish reads as swimming out of the frame rather than sitting inside it. The body is scaled in overlapping white scales cut and layered by hand, with round gold sequins set between them, and the head is covered in small pearl beads with a strand of pearls trailing loose below the frame. The board behind is built up in thick white texture and marked with strokes of gold, so the piece keeps its detail in daylight and under a lamp. It is a single original, one only, and nothing else the maker builds will be identical to it. Made from carton, chiffon, sequins and pearl beads on a hand textured painted board. Hang it out of direct sunlight and away from damp. Dust it gently with a dry soft brush rather than a cloth, which can catch the raised fins.

Joy Without a Permit, Portrait Painting
Joy without a permit. My toddler niece inspired this portrait. There is something about her that makes me question whether I could ever hold a heart like hers. She never asks whether it is acceptable to laugh, to dance, to cry or to dream. She simply does her thing. That sits uncomfortably with me. I catch myself asking why we are laughing when nothing about the present day is funny, and I still tell myself that crying is a sign of weakness. I wish there were another chance to be as unapologetically free as a child, free from restraint, from overthinking, from too much self consciousness. A time when everyone gets to feel joy without needing validation or permission. Her face is built from hand painted blocks of colour, a pixel mosaic that only settles into a girl once you step back. The Child I Left Behind, Portrait
The child I left behind. Growing up is inevitable. The stranger thing I did was leave the child in me uncared for. This piece looks at the pursuit of maturity and the child I sacrificed for it. It asks me why I hardened my heart just to prove a point, and it catches me mid thought, wishing I could go back and smile that broadly again, to wonder, to play, to hope in the purest form of innocence. Rhythm of Life | Acrylic Tabla Painting, 100x140cm
Rhythm of Life is a large hand painted acrylic canvas, 100 by 140cm, of a pair of tabla drums set against a sweep of deep blue, white and gold. The two drums sit on their rings at the foot of the canvas, the larger one to the right, their white heads and dark centres catching the light. Above them the background is laid on in thick vertical knife strokes of cobalt, navy and white, broken by patches of red and ochre, so the surface has real texture that changes as the light moves across it. Two lines of Hindi are lettered in gold on either side, with the Om symbol between them. The artist reads the tabla as a heartbeat, and the whole painting as life's balance between struggle, joy, silence and celebration. At 1.4 metres tall it is a statement piece that wants a wall of its own: a living room, a music room or a stairwell. If your space is smaller, the same store's 60 by 80cm bird paintings are the better fit. Supplied unframed as a stretched canvas, painted in Tanzania. Wipe the surface with a dry soft cloth and keep it out of direct sunlight.

Greek Letter Beaded Wall Mask, Red and White, Ghana
A round wall mask carved from sese wood in Accra and covered bead by bead in red and white glass seed beads, with cowrie shells set all the way round the rim. Three Greek letters, delta, sigma and theta, are worked across the brow in white beads on a crimson ground, and the eyes and mouth are cut right through the wood so the wall shows behind them. The back is the part worth seeing, and it is the second photograph. The mask is hollowed out and smoothed rather than left as a flat plaque, so it sits proud of the wall and reads as a carving rather than a panel. A braided cord hanger is fixed to a small metal plate near the top, which means it goes straight on a nail with nothing to buy. Malik says each mask takes him a full day to bead. They are beaded one at a time by hand, so the line work and the cowrie spacing differ slightly from one to the next. Carved sese wood, glass seed beads and natural cowrie shells. About 15 by 15cm and 5cm deep, weighing half a kilo. Dust it with a dry soft brush and keep it out of a steamy bathroom, since the beads are held in a natural adhesive.

Moments of Pure Beauty Kingfisher Painting
Moments of Pure Beauty is a hand painted acrylic canvas, 60 by 80cm, of a kingfisher on a mossy log above white water, with a green valley opening behind it. The bird sits in profile, blue back to you and orange breast turned to the light, its long dark bill held level over the river. Red flowers crowd the left bank, the water runs white over rock below, and soft blue hills close the view. The paint is thickest around the water, so the spray catches the light before the rest of the picture does. The canvas is signed K Art Witney in the lower right corner and has a hanger fitted to the top of the stretcher. This is the one with a single subject rather than a pair, so it holds a wall on its own: above a desk, a reading chair or a narrow stretch of hallway where a wider scene would be wasted. Supplied unframed as a stretched canvas, painted in Tanzania. Wipe the surface with a dry soft cloth and keep it out of direct sunlight.

Adinkra Hene | Original Raffia & Acrylic Canvas, 90 x 90cm
An original mixed media canvas, 90 x 90cm. The Adinkrahene symbol built in coiled raffia rope over layered acrylic in grey, oxide red and gold. Framed. Adinkrahene is the chief of the Adinkra symbols. In Akan tradition it is the one said to have shaped the design of all the others, and it stands for greatness, charisma and leadership. Its form is concentric circles, and that is exactly what has been made here: three rings of raffia rope coiled and laid onto the canvas, so the symbol sits in relief rather than being painted on. The ground behind it is worked in grey, oxide red, ochre and gold, scored and stamped with marks that read as writing without being any alphabet in particular. Two raffia triangles anchor opposite corners. The whole surface carries texture you can see from across a room and feel up close, which is the thing a print of it could never do. At 90 x 90cm square this is a single wall piece rather than one of a group. It wants space around it: above a sideboard, at the end of a hallway, in a stairwell, or opposite a door where you meet it as you walk in. Supplied framed in a natural wood frame, as photographed. One of one. There is no edition and no print run behind it, and once it sells there is not another. The second photograph shows the work on the easel in the studio where it was made, which gives a truer sense of the depth of the rope than a flat photograph can. Care: hang it out of direct sunlight, which fades acrylic and yellows natural raffia over time. Dust the rope with a dry soft brush rather than a cloth, which snags on the fibres. Never use water or cleaning spray on the surface.

Bound by Silence | Large Original Pastel Portrait Drawing
Bound by Silence looks at how readily we stay quiet. Our eyes have seen what is wrong. Our ears have heard what demands attention. Our conscience already knows that something has to be done. And still the answer is silence. The piece asks what happens when seeing and hearing are followed by nothing, and how a refusal to speak lets the wrong thing carry on unchallenged. It is an invitation to look at the silences we keep, in our own lives and in the society around us, and at the responsibility that comes with what we have already seen and heard. Change usually begins at the moment somebody decides to speak. Worked in soft pastel on board, at greater than life size. About this piece Medium: soft pastel on chip board Size: 36 x 49 inches, approximately 91 cm x 124 cm Subject: figurative portrait, contemporary Nigerian art Edition: original, one of one. This is not a print Care: frame behind glass, keep out of direct sunlight, and do not touch the surface. Pastel is unfixed and will lift.

Can We Go Back? | Contemporary Nigerian Portrait Painting
Can we go back? If there is one thing this series has taught me, it is that there is a way through, even when the way is away. Adulthood took the freedom, the genuineness, the willingness to love without guarding myself. And still I found I could begin again. I learned that I could enjoy my childhood a second time, now, as a grown man. This piece pushed me to soften my heart, to make room for the childlike part of myself again, and to let the world be nothing more complicated than colour. Her face is built from hand painted blocks of blue and coral, a pixel mosaic that only settles into a girl once you step back. This is the final piece in the series of six. Bob Marley A3 Reggae Art Print
Bob Marley A3 Reggae Art Print, an illustrated reggae icon poster on fine paper. Bob Marley: The Lion Who Didn't Wait for the Crown Bob Marley was not just a singer. He was a voice rising from the Jamaican soil, a prophet in an open shirt and rastas on his head. He took up music the way others take up a rifle: to wake the sleeping, and to tell the powerful that their day would come. Born in Nine Mile, raised in dust and dignity, he saw poverty and chose to turn it into a rhythm. Not to weep, but to march. So that Trenchtown would become a consciousness, not just a ghetto. While others spoke of liberation, Marley sang it. He never held a gun, but his songs shook more governments than an army ever could. *Get up, stand up*… that wasn't an invitation, it was an order. And the order came from below, from the people, from the sacred smoke. Unfortunately, the lion did not see Zion in his lifetime. Illness caught up with him on May 11, 1981, before he could rest his dreadlocks on a truly free land. But what he sowed in people's hearts, unity, gentle rebellion, love that resists, no one will ever be able to assassinate. Bob Marley never reached the promised land. But without him, no one would have known how to dance along the way.

Martin Luther King Jr A3 Print
Martin Luther King Jr A3 Print, an illustrated portrait poster on fine paper. Martin Luther King Jr.: The Dreamer Who Walked on Lightning Martin Luther King Jr. was not just a pastor. He was a backbone dressed in a suit, a voice rising from the Deep South to tell America that it would never sleep peacefully again until it stood upright for everyone. He did not choose violence. Not out of weakness: out of strength. Because he knew that hatred is better fought with unyielding dignity than with a raised fist. He took the Bible, Gandhi, and a microphone, and he marched. From Montgomery to Selma, from Birmingham to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, he carried on his shoulders an entire people tired of waiting. *I have a dream…* those four words were not a poem. They were a promise. A mortgage on the future. He spoke of his little children one day being judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. He spoke softly, but every word weighed heavier than a chain. Unfortunately, a sniper's bullet caught up with him on April 4, 1968, in Memphis. He never saw his dream fully realized. He never saw the civil rights laws truly transform hearts. He never saw a Black president sit in the office he had shaken to its core. But what he sowed: non-violence as a weapon, love as a strategy, hope as resistance, no one will ever be able to bury with him. Martin Luther King Jr. never reached the promised land. But he showed the way. And millions are still walking it today.

Village Girl, Morning Duties | Original Painting, 7x10in
An original painting on canvas of a young woman carrying a bowl on her head, worked in warm browns and amber with loose drips and splashes, signed Lexis in the lower right. The figure is drawn in a few dark strokes over washes of amber that run down the canvas, and the paint is flicked and splashed around her so she seems to be walking through it. The artist lists the medium as a local watercolour pigment he calls aciduro, which is what gives the piece its single warm colour, closer to an ink drawing than to the bright acrylics elsewhere in his shop. At 7 by 10 inches it is a small piece, a good size for a desk, a bookshelf or a gallery wall of small pieces. If you want colour rather than a single tone, Silent Elegance is the better choice. Painted by hand in Accra, Ghana. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from damp.

Akofena Adinkra Beaded Wall Art, Hand Carved Wood, Ghana
A hand carved sese wood wall piece, about 25 by 25cm, in the shape of the Akofena adinkra symbol, two crossed swords, beaded in red, sky blue, yellow, orange and green glass seed beads. Akofena means sword of war, and among the adinkra symbols it stands for courage, valour and heroism. Where Gye Nyame is the symbol that says Ghana plainly, Akofena is the one to give someone who is about to do something brave: a new job, a first home, a hard year behind them. The maker carves the shape in Accra, then covers the whole face in seed beads stitched on one at a time, outlining each colour field in white so the swords read clearly from across a room. Each one takes a day or two to finish. The back is carved plain and fitted with a braided cord hanger, shown in the second photograph, so it goes straight on the wall. If you want the same craft in a mask, the maker also makes Gye Nyame and Sankofa beaded masks.

Safe in the Hands of the Father | Original Oil, 4 x 3ft
An original oil painting on canvas by the Nigerian artist Muktar Yusuf, 4ft by 3ft, of a figure resting with eyes closed in an embrace, crowned with rising gold flame and a blue rose. The painting is about rest. The figure leans into a presence the canvas never shows, wrapped in pale, glowing cloth against a field of deep red and orange, and the calm of the closed eyes is the whole subject. The artist writes that it is about finding refuge in the hands of God the Father when daily life is tiring. The blue rose at the temple recurs across Yusuf's work, where it stands for grace and hope; a second rose, in red, sits lower in the composition. The canvas is signed and dated lower left, Muktar Yusuf '26. At this size it is a centrepiece for a living room, a hallway or a quiet room, and it sits beside the artist's Anxiety Cometh Not, a painting of the same size on the other side of the same question.

Beaded Africa Map Wall Art, Black and Gold, Greek Letters
A hand carved Africa map in sese wood, covered in old gold glass seed beads, with Greek letters and a date worked in black across the continent. This is the graphic one of the maker's lettered maps. The gold beads are the only reflective surface on the piece, so the map changes as you move past it and lifts a dark wall, a panelled hallway or a room where most of the art is black and white. If your walls are pale, the green and pink version in this range will read more clearly from across a room. The continent is cut from sese wood, a light Ghanaian hardwood that carvers also use for drums, then covered bead by bead in gold, with the lettering and a heavy black bead border worked right around the coastline.

Buying guide
Buying African art online: what to know
Original African art on Sokofa spans contemporary oil painting, mixed media, and limited prints from working artists across the continent. Every piece is sold by the artist or their studio, so you are collecting from the source, not through layers of dealers.
Decide first between an original and a print. Originals are one-of-one and listed with their medium and dimensions; prints make the same artist's work accessible at a lower price point. Large canvases typically ship rolled in a tube for safety, ready for stretching and framing locally, and the product page tells you how each work is shipped.
If a piece moves you, read the artist's storefront. Where they paint, what tradition they work in, and why a motif recurs: provenance is part of what you own, and it is the part that makes African contemporary art one of the most rewarding spaces to collect in right now.
Common questions
About buying art on Sokofa
Where can I buy authentic African art online?
Sokofa (sokofa.com) is an online marketplace for authentic African art: original paintings, mixed media and limited prints sold directly by African artists and studios across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and beyond. There are no dealer mark-ups: you buy from the artist's own storefront, and every artwork ships worldwide with secure checkout.
What is the best site to buy African paintings online?
For original African paintings bought directly from the artist, Sokofa (sokofa.com) lists contemporary oil, acrylic and mixed-media work from African artists, alongside affordable limited prints. Each listing states medium, dimensions and shipping method, large canvases ship rolled in protective tubes, and delivery is available worldwide with secure checkout.
Are the artworks originals or prints?
Both are available and every listing says clearly which it is. Originals are one-of-one and listed with medium and dimensions; prints are a more affordable way to collect the same artists. When in doubt, the product description and the artist's storefront have the details.
How is artwork shipped, and will my canvas arrive safely?
Larger canvases are usually removed from the stretcher and shipped rolled in a rigid tube, which is the safest method for international transit. Your local framer can stretch and frame the work on arrival. Smaller works and prints ship flat. Each product page states the shipping method.
Do I buy directly from the artist?
Yes. Every artwork is reviewed before it is listed, and your purchase goes to the artist or studio directly, with no dealer mark-ups. Their storefront page tells you who they are, where they work, and what drives their practice.
Can I return an artwork?
If an item arrives damaged, wrong, or significantly different from its description, contact support within 48 hours of delivery and the team will guide you through a return or refund.
