Sankofa Bird Beaded Wall Mask, Blue and Red, Ghana
A hand carved sese wood wall mask, about 32cm long, beaded all over in tiny glass seed beads with the Sankofa bird across the brow and a rim of natural cowrie shells. The bird is looking back over its shoulder, and that is the whole point of it. Sankofa is an Akan adinkra sign from Ghana and the saying behind it is that there is nothing wrong with going back for what you have left behind. It is a piece for a wall you walk past every day, a hallway or a stairwell, where people come close enough to see that the pattern is thousands of separate beads and not paint. The bird is worked in royal blue with a yellow beak, set against red on one side and turquoise on the other, with green, yellow, black and white banding across the lower face. The carved brow, nose and lips are left as bare dark wood so the carving still reads through the colour. Natural cowrie shells run down both edges. Every bead is laid on by hand, one at a time. The back is hollowed with a chisel and left unfinished, and a braided cord hanger is fixed to a metal plate, so it arrives ready to hang. Dust it with a dry soft brush. Sushi Pearl Beaded Barrel Bag, Ivory, Handmade Purse
A hand beaded barrel bag in ivory pearl finish beads with clear faceted beads worked through it, carried by a beaded top handle in the same rows. The short, rounded barrel shape is where the name comes from, and it is what makes the bag read as a considered piece rather than another beaded clutch. It suits a wedding, a party or a dinner where a soft neutral works harder than a colour. Ivory sits with cream, champagne, gold and every shade of white, so it goes with the outfit you already own rather than one you have to buy for it. Beaded Elephants, Mother and Child Set, Ghana Wood
A pair of hand carved wooden elephants, mother and child, each with a beaded blanket of tiny glass seed beads worked over the head and back. The mother stands about 10cm, the child about 7cm. They are sold as a set and they are meant to be kept as one. The small one stands a little ahead of the mother in the photograph, the way a calf walks, and that is how they look on a shelf: two objects that read as one thing. It makes them an easier gift than a single ornament, for a new baby, a nursery, or anyone who has been given an elephant before and has nowhere to put a second identical one. The beadwork is laid in bands of turquoise, red, yellow, royal blue, green and white, with a rosette worked over each ear. An original acrylic painting on canvas, 13 by 20 inches, showing three figures carrying the harvest home on their heads under a wide blue sky. Akuaba Fertility Doll, Akan Carved Sese Wood, 25cm
A carved wooden Akuaba figure, 25cm tall, with the large flat disc head of the best known Akan form, a ringed body and a beaded necklace at the throat. Akuaba means Akua's child. The name comes from an Akan account of a woman called Akua who could not conceive, was advised at a shrine to have a small figure carved and to carry and care for it as a child, and who later gave birth. Her neighbours are said to have greeted the baby as Akua's child, and the figures have carried the name since. They stand for motherhood, for healthy children and for a family line continuing. The carving follows the conventions rather than inventing them. The head is the flat disc that most people picture when they think of an akuaba, the forehead is high, which is read as wisdom, and the neck and body are ringed, which is read as health and wellbeing. The face is small and still against the size of the head, which is the whole effect of the form. Akuaba are carved by Akan peoples across Ghana, the Asante and the Fante among them. This gallery works from Cape Coast, which is in Fante country. It stands on its own base. The maker gives the size as 25 by 10cm. This is sold as a carved figure and a piece of Akan art. It is hand carved from a natural material, so the grain and the finish differ from one to the next, and the beaded necklace is strung separately and sits loose at the throat. A hand carved wall mask in sese wood, about 45cm tall, with an elongated face, gently closed eyes and a small carved head rising from the crown. Carved scrolls rise over the brow, the hair is cut in fine grooves back from the forehead, and the small head above it wears its own tall ridged crest, which gives the mask its height and its presence. The finish is a deep, polished brown. The maker named it Prosperity for a life rich in more than money: wisdom, inner peace, growth, good fortune and the strength to move forward. The calm, closed eyed face is meant as a reminder that prosperity begins within and grows through purpose, patience and good relationships. Greek Letter Beaded Elephant Sculpture, Ghana, 10cm
A small carved wood elephant from Accra, blackened and polished, with panels of red and white glass seed beads laid over its head and down its back. The trunk is raised, the ears are carved proud of the head, and it stands on its own four feet on a desk or a shelf. The beadwork carries three Greek letters, theta, sigma and delta, running down the back panel, with a second panel across the forehead. The second photograph is the view from behind and it is the one that shows them. Everything else is left as bare carved wood, so the beading reads as a saddle cloth on a plain black animal rather than as decoration all over. An original acrylic painting on canvas, 18 by 26 inches, of a musician playing the goje, the one string fiddle of northern Ghana, in magenta, green and gold. The player sits behind his instrument with his eyes closed and his mouth open in song, the gourd bowl of the fiddle swinging round in the foreground and the bow laid across it. The artist writes the instrument's name as goji. Everything is broken into loose vertical strokes of colour, so the man, the fiddle and the room seem to dissolve into the sound, and a row of pink flower forms along the bottom edge carries the freshness of the title. A round hand carved sese wood wall mask, about 15cm across, beaded in black and white stripes with open slit eyes, a carved mouth and a rim of natural cowrie shells. It is the only one of the maker's masks worked in black and white alone, so it suits a monochrome room or a gallery wall where colour would compete. The stripes curve around the eyes and the brow like a zebra's markings, and the cowries around the rim soften the edge. The maker carves the face in Accra and stitches the glass seed beads on one at a time, which takes a day or two per mask. Cowrie shells were used as money across much of West Africa, and they still carry that sense of wealth and good fortune. The Observer Carved Wall Mask, Ghana Sese Wood, 38cm
A hand carved wooden wall mask, 38cm tall, with long hooded eyes cut in fine vertical lines, ears carved at the sides and a combed band across the hairline. The maker named it The Observer, for the wisdom that comes of watching before acting and listening before speaking. The carving carries it: the eyes are the deepest cut part of the piece, the lids heavy over them, and the ears are set proud of the face. The ears are what separate it from the rest of her masks. Neither The Enlightened One nor Prosperity has them, and on a face this long they change what the piece is doing, from a face being looked at to a face that is listening back. This is also the smallest of the three at 38cm, and the greyest, closer to weathered driftwood than to the warm brown of The Enlightened One or the dark stain of Prosperity. Pick by wall and by scale. The Observer suits a narrow space, a hallway or the wall beside a door, where a larger mask would crowd it. The maker gives the size as 38 by 15cm. Every mask is carved by hand from a natural material, so the grain, the colour and the depth of the cut differ from piece to piece and yours will not match the photograph exactly. Greek Letter Beaded Wall Mask, Red and White, Ghana
A round wall mask carved from sese wood in Accra and covered bead by bead in red and white glass seed beads, with cowrie shells set all the way round the rim. Three Greek letters, delta, sigma and theta, are worked across the brow in white beads on a crimson ground, and the eyes and mouth are cut right through the wood so the wall shows behind them. The back is the part worth seeing, and it is the second photograph. The mask is hollowed out and smoothed rather than left as a flat plaque, so it sits proud of the wall and reads as a carving rather than a panel. A braided cord hanger is fixed to a small metal plate near the top, which means it goes straight on a nail with nothing to buy. Malik says each mask takes him a full day to bead. They are beaded one at a time by hand, so the line work and the cowrie spacing differ slightly from one to the next. Carved sese wood, glass seed beads and natural cowrie shells. Adinkra Hene | Original Raffia & Acrylic Canvas, 90 x 90cm
An original mixed media canvas, 90 x 90cm. The Adinkrahene symbol built in coiled raffia rope over layered acrylic in grey, oxide red and gold. Framed. Adinkrahene is the chief of the Adinkra symbols. In Akan tradition it is the one said to have shaped the design of all the others, and it stands for greatness, charisma and leadership. Its form is concentric circles, and that is exactly what has been made here: three rings of raffia rope coiled and laid onto the canvas, so the symbol sits in relief rather than being painted on. The ground behind it is worked in grey, oxide red, ochre and gold, scored and stamped with marks that read as writing without being any alphabet in particular. Two raffia triangles anchor opposite corners. The whole surface carries texture you can see from across a room and feel up close, which is the thing a print of it could never do. At 90 x 90cm square this is a single wall piece rather than one of a group. It wants space around it: above a sideboard, at the end of a hallway, in a stairwell, or opposite a door where you meet it as you walk in. Supplied framed in a natural wood frame, as photographed. One of one. There is no edition and no print run behind it, and once it sells there is not another. The second photograph shows the work on the easel in the studio where it was made, which gives a truer sense of the depth of the rope than a flat photograph can. Krobo Glass Bead Bracelet, Yellow, Green or Red, Ghana
A handmade Ghanaian bracelet of chunky glass disc beads in one solid colour, strung on a white cord and made to suit men and women alike. The photograph shows the yellow bracelet. It also comes in green and in red, which you choose from the colour options; those two are not pictured, so ask the seller if you would like to see them first. The beads are made in the Krobo style of Ghana's Eastern Region, thick flat discs with a soft matte finish, stacked side by side all the way round so the bracelet reads as one solid ring of colour. Village Girl, Morning Duties | Original Painting, 7x10in
An original painting on canvas of a young woman carrying a bowl on her head, worked in warm browns and amber with loose drips and splashes, signed Lexis in the lower right. The figure is drawn in a few dark strokes over washes of amber that run down the canvas, and the paint is flicked and splashed around her so she seems to be walking through it. The artist lists the medium as a local watercolour pigment he calls aciduro, which is what gives the piece its single warm colour, closer to an ink drawing than to the bright acrylics elsewhere in his shop. Akofena Adinkra Beaded Wall Art, Hand Carved Wood, Ghana
A hand carved sese wood wall piece, about 25 by 25cm, in the shape of the Akofena adinkra symbol, two crossed swords, beaded in red, sky blue, yellow, orange and green glass seed beads. Akofena means sword of war, and among the adinkra symbols it stands for courage, valour and heroism. Where Gye Nyame is the symbol that says Ghana plainly, Akofena is the one to give someone who is about to do something brave: a new job, a first home, a hard year behind them. The maker carves the shape in Accra, then covers the whole face in seed beads stitched on one at a time, outlining each colour field in white so the swords read clearly from across a room. Intuition Carved Wall Mask, Ghana Sese Wood, 45cm
A hand carved wooden wall mask in dark stained sese wood, 45cm tall, with closed eyes, a small carved head at the crown and patterned metal panels set into the brow and cheeks. The maker named it Intuition, for the kind of knowing that does not come through the eyes, and the carving is built around that idea. The eyelids are carved heavy and shut, the mouth is closed, and the whole face is long, narrow and still. In the maker's own words, when the eyes are silent, the spirit can see. What sets it apart from the gallery's other masks is the metal. Two triangles sit above the brows and two curved panels sit under the eyes, each worked with a fine pattern in gold and copper tones, and against the dark wood they catch the light while the carved face stays in shadow. If you want the same long face and carved crown without the metal, the Prosperity mask is the plainer sibling. If your wall is dark, the pale Enlightened One mask will stand out better. It is made to hang and suits a living room, an office, a hallway or a gallery wall, anywhere with enough plain space around it to be looked at properly. A hand carved Africa map in sese wood, covered in old gold glass seed beads, with Greek letters and a date worked in black across the continent. This is the graphic one of the maker's lettered maps. The gold beads are the only reflective surface on the piece, so the map changes as you move past it and lifts a dark wall, a panelled hallway or a room where most of the art is black and white. If your walls are pale, the green and pink version in this range will read more clearly from across a room. The continent is cut from sese wood, a light Ghanaian hardwood that carvers also use for drums, then covered bead by bead in gold, with the lettering and a heavy black bead border worked right around the coastline. Gye Nyame Adinkra Raffia Coffee Table, Glass Top
A round handmade centre table: natural raffia rope coiled over a recycled tyre body, with the Gye Nyame Adinkra symbol worked into the top in dark rope, a clear round glass top above it and four tapered brass tone legs. Most statement furniture in a room has to fight for a job. This one already has the job of a coffee table, and does the talking underneath the glass rather than on top of it, so the surface stays usable. The glass sits on small posts just clear of the rope, which is what lets you read the symbol through it while still putting a cup down. The body is a worn out tyre, wound round and round with rope until the tyre disappears. It is a genuinely old idea in West African furniture making, and it is the reason a table this size is still liftable by one person. The rope is banded in dark and natural blocks around the sides, and the coiled symbol on the top face is laid in by hand, coil by coil. Lift the glass off to move the table. Dust the rope with a soft brush and keep it out of standing water.

The artist paints the women from the back, in deep browns against a haze of violet, grey and yellow, so what you read is the walk and the load rather than a portrait. The maker named it The Enlightened One, for the pursuit of understanding and the quiet that comes with it, and the carving is worked to match. The face is long and narrow, the expression still, and the eyes are cut right through the wood so the wall behind shows at the pupils. In her own words, look beyond the face and discover the wisdom within. The wood is the thing to notice. Sese is pale when it is left alone, and most carvers stain it dark, which is what the maker has done on her Prosperity mask. Gye Nyame Adinkra Beaded Wall Mask, Red and Green
A hand carved sese wood wall mask, about 32cm long, with the Gye Nyame adinkra symbol beaded across the brow in black and white glass seed beads and a rim of natural cowrie shells. Gye Nyame is the adinkra you see most often in Ghana, on cloth, on gates, on the side of a bus. It means except for God, and it is a statement about the limits of what anyone can do alone. If you want one piece that says Ghana plainly to anyone who knows the symbols, this is the one to pick. The symbol sits on a ground split red and green, with a band of blue, yellow and white beadwork along the top edge and rows of yellow, orange and white across the lower face. The carved brow, nose and mouth are left as bare dark wood. Natural cowrie shells run down both edges. Every bead is laid on by hand, one at a time. The back is hollowed with a chisel and left unfinished, and a braided cord hanger is fixed to a metal plate, so it arrives ready to hang. Dust it with a dry soft brush. An original mixed media portrait on canvas, 60 x 80cm. The head wrap is built from coiled raffia rope worked onto the surface, and the face beneath it is painted in acrylic greys. Everything around the face is colour: a red jacket with pink spots, a white collar, and a background of panels in black, ochre and red carrying hand painted symbols in white and gold. Fragments of newsprint are collaged into the surface and left showing through the paint. It is signed Nanakay at the lower left and dated 2026, and it comes in the light wood frame shown in the photograph. This is a one off piece rather than a print, so once it goes it cannot be made again.

Male and Female Wall Mask Pair, Carved Sese Wood, Ghana
A pair of hand carved wall masks, one male and one female, in sese wood with a dark brown finish, each about 46cm tall and sold together as a set of two. The female mask wears carved plaits falling either side of a ringed neck. The male has ears and a long carved beard. Both have slatted eyes cut right through the wood and a crest running over the crown, and on each forehead and cheek sits a panel with a punched, dotted border in copper and silver tones. The finish is rubbed back to show paler wood on the raised edges. The maker carved them as a pair to speak of complementarity: strength, protection and action in the masculine figure, nurture, wisdom and creativity in the feminine, and the idea that neither stands complete on its own. A set of three hand carved wooden wall masks, made in Ghana. Each mask is a long oval face with a multicoloured stained finish, and its patterns are carved back to the pale wood beneath. The left mask carries a lion across the brow and a lattice over the cheeks. The middle one is red, with spirals on the brow and a carved sunburst on each cheek.
