Product description
Overview
Babá Onílù Ònírò is an original acrylic painting of a Yoruba elder and his talking drum. The drum is the gangan, the hourglass drum whose pitch bends under the player's arm until it speaks. In Yoruba it does speak. It carries names, praise, lineage, warnings, and the histories that were never written down. The man playing it is not an entertainer. He is a custodian. Painted in expressive realism, with the traditional attire given its full colour, the work is a tribute to African oral tradition and to music as a form of memory.
