An original acrylic painting of a village hut by the water at sunset. A hut with a rust and gold roof sits among palms on the left, two small figures in red and yellow walk towards the shore, and a yellow sun breaks through a blue evening sky over still water. The paint is laid on thickly, so the grass and leaves catch the light, while the sky is blended soft. It is signed LEXIS at the lower right. At 20 x 13 inches, about 51 x 33cm, it is a small landscape for a bedroom, a study or a quiet corner of a living room. Painted in acrylic on canvas. It ships rolled in a tube, unstretched and unframed. Keep it out of direct sun and dust it gently with a soft dry cloth.

Arts
An original acrylic painting of a crowd of figures in crimson, ochre and white. Tall, close standing figures fill the left of the canvas in deep reds and burgundy, their round heads caught by touches of white and gold, and the crowd fades into a pale, warm light on the right. The artist paints it as a celebration of the bonds that unite people through shared experience, tradition and purpose, with the light standing for optimism and the promise of a brighter future. It is a landscape canvas of 20 x 13 inches, about 51 x 33cm, painted in acrylic and signed LEXIS at the lower right. Of the artist's crowd scenes, this is the one held almost entirely in warm reds, so it brings heat to a pale wall. If you would rather have a gathering of figures in cooler blues at a smaller size, look at the artist's Figures of Unity. The canvas ships rolled in a tube, unstretched and unframed, so allow for stretching or framing. Keep it out of direct sun and dust it gently with a soft dry brush.

An original acrylic painting of wild flowers in a blue vase, 10 by 14 inches. Painted in thick, textured strokes, the bouquet bursts from a round deep blue vase in reds, yellows, whites and soft pinks against a blue and grey ground, with a single fallen bloom resting at the vase's foot. Signed Lexis, it is a one of a kind piece, not a print. Among the shop's dancers, markets and mothers this is the piece that rests the eye, a quiet subject painted with the same energy. It ships rolled in a tube, unframed, ready for a standard 10 x 14 inch frame. If you prefer a figure to hang beside it, see Beautiful Red Flower Painting by the same artist.

An original acrylic painting of a rainy city street at dusk, glowing with autumn leaves. A tree heavy with gold and orange leaves leans over a wet pathway lined with street lamps, their light pooling in yellow reflections across the ground. Rain falls in thin white streaks through deep blue air, and far down the street two small figures walk under umbrellas, one of them pink. The cool blues and warm ambers balance solitude with comfort, and the loose, layered strokes make the scene feel damp and moving. Painted and signed LEXIS in Ghana. Acrylic on canvas, 13 x 20 inches (about 33 x 51 cm).

An original hyper realistic charcoal drawing of two hands reaching towards each other, on A2 paper. One hand reaches down from the top of the sheet, finger extended, a round mark on the back of the hand; the other opens upwards from below, a beaded bracelet at the wrist spelling the artist's name. Every crease, knuckle and nail is drawn in fine detail in black charcoal on a plain white ground, so the piece reads from across a room and rewards a close look. It is drawn by Fredrick Banda (Linesbyfred), a self taught hyper realism artist, and signed lower right. Charcoal on white Manila board paper, A2, 42 x 59.4 cm, sold unframed.

Home Decor
An original acrylic painting on canvas, 13 by 20 inches, showing three figures carrying the harvest home on their heads under a wide blue sky. It suits a hallway, a landing or a study, anywhere a wall needs warmth without noise. The paint is laid on with a knife. The ground is built up in thick ochre and rust strokes that stand off the canvas, while the sky is scraped thin enough for the weave to show through, and the second photograph is a close crop of the bare tree at the left where both are easy to see. The three figures are painted from behind with their faces turned away, which is what makes the picture read as a memory of a walk home rather than a portrait of anyone in particular. The bowls of red, green and yellow produce carry the only clean colour in the piece and they sit right at the top, so the eye climbs. Original acrylic on canvas, 13 by 20 inches, roughly 33 by 51cm. The artist signs his work LEXIS and the signature is painted into the lower right corner in dark red. There is one of this painting and no second copy. Hang it out of direct sunlight and dust it with a dry soft brush.

Can we go back? If there is one thing this series has taught me, it is that there is a way through, even when the way is away. Adulthood took the freedom, the genuineness, the willingness to love without guarding myself. And still I found I could begin again. I learned that I could enjoy my childhood a second time, now, as a grown man. This piece pushed me to soften my heart, to make room for the childlike part of myself again, and to let the world be nothing more complicated than colour. Her face is built from hand painted blocks of blue and coral, a pixel mosaic that only settles into a girl once you step back. This is the final piece in the series of six. An original acrylic painting of four drummers in blue. Four figures in flowing blue and turquoise robes and tall peaked headdresses move across the canvas, each carrying a round drum, against a background of turquoise sky and ochre light. Lexis paints them in loose, fast strokes that leave the figures half dissolved into the colour, so the picture reads as rhythm and movement rather than portrait. The artist's own title for it is Drummers and Dancers. It is a medium sized landscape canvas, 20 x 13 inches (about 51 x 33cm), signed LEXIS in the lower right corner. If you want something warmer for the same wall, the Echoes of Community paintings by the same artist are the same size in brown and red. Acrylic on canvas. An original painting of an African woman carrying a pot on her head, in sepia browns. She walks with her eyes closed and a faint smile, one arm raised to steady the pot, wearing a striped head wrap, large hoop earrings, a beaded necklace, bangles and a beaded waist. The artist works in aciduro watercolour on canvas, letting the pigment bleed, drip and spatter, then drawing fine lines over it, so the piece sits between figurative and semi abstract. It measures 22 x 30 inches, about 56 x 76cm, and is signed and dated LEXIS 2009 at the lower right. If you like the medium but want something smaller, the artist's Village Girl, Morning Duties is painted the same way at 7 x 10 inches. The canvas ships rolled in a tube, unstretched and unframed, so allow for stretching or framing. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades watercolour, and dust it gently with a soft dry brush.

An original oil painting on canvas by the Nigerian artist Muktar Yusuf, 4ft by 3ft, of a figure resting with eyes closed in an embrace, crowned with rising gold flame and a blue rose. The painting is about rest. The figure leans into a presence the canvas never shows, wrapped in pale, glowing cloth against a field of deep red and orange, and the calm of the closed eyes is the whole subject. The artist writes that it is about finding refuge in the hands of God the Father when daily life is tiring. The blue rose at the temple recurs across Yusuf's work, where it stands for grace and hope; a second rose, in red, sits lower in the composition. The canvas is signed and dated lower left, Muktar Yusuf '26. At this size it is a centrepiece for a living room, a hallway or a quiet room, and it sits beside the artist's Anxiety Cometh Not, a painting of the same size on the other side of the same question.

An original acrylic still life of three golden empanadas on a dark plate, with a bowl of red sauce beside them, painted in thick expressive strokes on ceiling board. It is a kitchen and dining room painting. Food still life earns its place where people eat, and this one is warm rather than formal, all browns, golds and a deep teal ground that makes the pastry glow. The paint is worked thickly enough to see. The crimped edges of the pastry are built up in ridges you can read across the surface, and the filling is scraped in with broken colour rather than blended, which is what gives it the coarse, appetising texture. The board is a ceiling board panel, a support Nigerian painters use often, and the maker gives the frame depth as 3cm. It is signed and dated 26 in the lower left corner. This is an original, not a print, and there is one of it. The maker gives the artwork size as 32.5 by 42cm. Hang it out of direct sunlight, which fades pigment over time, and dust the surface with a dry soft brush rather than a cloth, which can catch on raised paint.

An original acrylic painting on canvas, 13 by 20 inches, showing three market women seen from behind, one with a tray of produce balanced on her head. Not one face is shown. The artist paints the women from the back, in deep browns against a haze of violet, grey and yellow, so what you read is the walk and the load rather than a portrait. The figures further off dissolve into a few marks of red and green, which is how a busy market actually looks when you are standing in it. The clothes carry all the colour: a yellow top, a rose wrapper, a red blouse, a green skirt and a band of turquoise, laid on thickly so the ridges catch the light. It is painted in acrylic on canvas and signed Lexis in the lower right. The artist sends it rolled in a tube, so it arrives unframed and ready for the frame or stretcher you choose. Hang it out of direct sunlight and dust it with a dry soft brush. At 13 by 20 inches it suits a narrow wall, a hallway, or a space beside a bookcase where a larger canvas would crowd. If you have the wall for something bigger, the artist has larger originals on Sokofa.

Brushstrokes #1 is a small original abstract in watercolour on fabric, 5.3 by 6.7 inches, signed Moses Wainaina and made in Kenya. It is the first piece in an ongoing series exploring geometry through painting. Nested rectangles of indigo blue and dark brown are dragged across a pale ground, and because the paint sits on cloth rather than paper, every stroke catches on the weave and the texture of the fabric shows through. The artist calls the approach abstrart. At this size it suits a shelf, a desk or a narrow stretch of wall, the places a large canvas cannot go. A note from the artist for collectors: as the first piece in the series, the buyer may keep the title Brushstrokes #1 or give it an official second title, which the artist records on the signed certificate of authenticity supplied with the work. Watercolour on fabric, 5.3 x 6.7 inches (about 13.5 x 17cm).

Mother and Son is an original acrylic painting on canvas, 13 by 20 inches, showing a young mother in profile with her child carried on her back. She is painted in broad flat strokes of red, violet, green and pale gold, and the same colours run through the wall behind her, so the figures and the background are built from one palette rather than set apart. A single gold earring catches the light at her ear. The child is wrapped against her shoulder with only the top of the head showing, which is how the whole story of the painting is told in one small shape. This is the canvas itself, not a print or a reproduction. It is signed Lexis in the lower right corner and there is only one of it. The second photograph is a close view of the head and shoulders, where you can see the ridged paint and the dry scraped marks that a print can never give you. At 13 by 20 inches, roughly 33 by 51cm, it is a small painting that works best where people stand close to it, a hallway, a bedroom wall or a shelf where it can lean. Painted in acrylic on canvas. An original acrylic painting of a crowd of women in brown, ochre and blue. The artist paints them working together, some carrying pots and others head pans, in an impressionistic style of loose, textured strokes. The artist gives the size as 20 x 13 inches, about 51 x 33cm, and it is signed LEXIS at the lower right. It is the first of a pair: Echoes of Community II is the same gathering in warm reds, while this one is cooler, with flashes of sky blue through the browns, so it suits a room with blue or grey in it. An original acrylic painting of a mother carrying her child on her back. Lexis paints the mother from behind as she walks into a soft landscape of peach, yellow and pale green, her dress and the wrapper holding her child broken into strokes of red, pink and white, with a second figure walking beside her. Bright green is flicked across both sides of the canvas like foliage. In the artist's words, the painting turns an everyday act of caring for a child into a symbol of love, protection and resilience, about carrying hopes and the promise of a new generation as much as a child, and the second figure adds a sense of companionship and community. It measures 10 x 14 inches, about 25 x 36cm, and is signed LEXIS at the lower right. There is one only. It ships rolled in a tube, unstretched and unframed.

An original acrylic painting on canvas, 18 by 26 inches, of a musician playing the goje, the one string fiddle of northern Ghana, in magenta, green and gold. The player sits behind his instrument with his eyes closed and his mouth open in song, the gourd bowl of the fiddle swinging round in the foreground and the bow laid across it. The artist writes the instrument's name as goji. Everything is broken into loose vertical strokes of colour, so the man, the fiddle and the room seem to dissolve into the sound, and a row of pink flower forms along the bottom edge carries the freshness of the title. At 18 by 26 inches it is a good size for a living room or a study wall where one painting has to carry the room. If you want music in quieter colour, the artist's flute player painting, The Masterpiece, is the calmer piece; this one is for a wall that can take full saturation. Painted by hand in acrylic on canvas and signed Lexis in the lower right. The artist says it is shipped rolled in a tube. Keep it out of direct sunlight and dust with a soft dry brush.

A portrait of a Black woman rendered in gold and warm brown against a background of pink, orange and violet. She meets the viewer's eye directly, shoulders bare, chin level, with none of the softening that portraits of women so often carry. The mood is calm authority rather than decoration. The palette is the point. Gold and copper across the skin, hot pink and tangerine behind, violet cooling the edges. It is a warm piece, so it lifts a room with cool grey or white walls and holds its own against exposed brick, dark green or navy. Size 60 x 40cm, portrait orientation. Supplied on canvas in a wood frame with a varnished finish, ready to hang straight out of the box. It works as a single statement above a sofa, a bed or a console table, or as the anchor of a gallery wall with smaller abstract or typographic pieces around it. Because it is portrait rather than landscape, it suits a narrow wall, a chimney breast or an alcove where a wide piece would not fit. By Wisdom Mullar. Colour may read a little differently in person than on screen, and the light in your room will change how the gold and pink sit together. Care: hang out of direct sunlight, which fades pigment over time. Dust with a dry soft cloth. Do not use water, solvents or spray cleaners on the surface.

Chasing Tomorrow African Painting, an original canvas work honouring street traders. This painting speaks about survival, the unending cycle of work, rest, and struggle that defines many people's lives. The figure, asleep on his wheelbarrow, represents the strength it takes to keep going even when exhaustion sets in. It's a reminder that survival itself is an act of courage. No one else will hustle for him, he carries his own weight, dreams, and responsibilities. This piece honors the silent resilience of those who keep pushing, even when life gives them little rest.

An original acrylic painting of a mother gazing down at the baby son in her arms, in glowing, vivid colour. She wears large gold hoop earrings and smiles with her eyes half closed, while the baby lifts his face towards hers. Both are built from loose strokes of turquoise, gold, red and violet that seem lit from within against a warm purple and amber ground. A tender, joyful piece for a living room, a nursery or as a gift for a new mother. Painted and signed LEXIS in Ghana. Acrylic on canvas, 13 x 20 inches (about 33 x 51 cm). If you like this, the artist's Mother and Son painting shows a mother carrying her baby on her back.

An original acrylic painting on canvas of a woman seen from behind, in turquoise, gold, violet and deep earth tones, signed Lexis in the lower right. She stands turned away from the viewer, so there is no face to read, only the line of her back, a gold hoop earring, gold bands on her arm and a string of white beads at her waist. The background is laid in loose vertical strokes of colour that she seems to step out of, and the close detail photograph shows how thickly the paint sits in places, with the canvas weave showing through where it is thin. At 10 by 14 inches it is a small painting, sized for a narrow wall, a shelf or a group of smaller works rather than a single large space. If you want the same palette with more going on, the artist's larger figure paintings sit alongside it in the shop. Painted by hand in Accra, Ghana. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from damp.

An original mixed media portrait on canvas, 60 x 80cm. The head wrap is built from coiled raffia rope worked onto the surface, and the face beneath it is painted in acrylic greys. Everything around the face is colour: a red jacket with pink spots, a white collar, and a background of panels in black, ochre and red carrying hand painted symbols in white and gold. Fragments of newsprint are collaged into the surface and left showing through the paint. It is signed Nanakay at the lower left and dated 2026, and it comes in the light wood frame shown in the photograph. This is a one off piece rather than a print, so once it goes it cannot be made again.

Hold On is an original reduction linocut and acrylic painting on canvas by Nigerian artist Tosin Oyeniyi. This unique artwork combines the striking graphic quality of reduction linocut printmaking with the rich depth of acrylic painting, creating a visually compelling mixed media piece that stands out in any collection. The title Hold On speaks to themes of perseverance, endurance, and the quiet strength required to navigate life's challenges. Through bold compositions and layered textures, the artist captures the tension and beauty of holding steadfast in the face of adversity. The reduction linocut technique involves progressively carving away a single block of linoleum, making each print irreversible and truly one of a kind. Combined with hand-painted acrylic elements on canvas, this piece achieves a remarkable interplay of print precision and painterly expression. Perfect for collectors of original African art, printmaking enthusiasts, and anyone seeking authentic contemporary artwork with emotional depth and technical mastery. A powerful statement piece for homes, offices, and galleries.

An original mixed media painting on canvas, 80 x 55 cm, in blues, greys and gold. Two faces in cool blue grey sit either side of a golden afro comb whose handle is a raised fist, against a pale blue ground run through with drips. Dark hair rises like a crown above each head, and the comb's long teeth reach down between them. In the artist's words, the painting turns the comb into "a powerful symbol of inner strength", linking it to the Black Power movement, where the comb stood for pride and defiance, and to "the personal battles we fight to maintain who we are". This is a single original by South African artist Gary Frier, signed lower right. His Matriarch and Rousing Grace are also in this shop. Keep it out of direct sunlight.

An original Adinkra painting on canvas, 60 x 80cm, framed. Nsɛnkyerɛnne, meaning signs or symbols, is a contemporary exploration of culture, identity and heritage, rooted in the artist's personal connection to Ghanaian cultural traditions. At its centre sits Gye Nyame, the best known Adinkra symbol, an expression of the supremacy of God. The concentric circles are Adinkrahene, chief of the Adinkra symbols, standing for greatness and leadership, and a backward looking bird recalls Sankofa, the call to return for what has been left behind. Through layered colour, expressive marks, charcoal and symbolic forms, the artist reimagines these traditional signs within a contemporary visual landscape, inviting you to look beyond their beauty, engage with their meanings and form a personal connection with the ideas they carry. Painted in 2026 in gouache, acrylic and charcoal, and sold framed as photographed. A conversation with the artist's roots, and a striking anchor piece for a living room, office or gallery wall.

An original mixed media canvas, 90 x 90cm. The Adinkrahene symbol built in coiled raffia rope over layered acrylic in grey, oxide red and gold. Framed. Adinkrahene is the chief of the Adinkra symbols. In Akan tradition it is the one said to have shaped the design of all the others, and it stands for greatness, charisma and leadership. Its form is concentric circles, and that is exactly what has been made here: three rings of raffia rope coiled and laid onto the canvas, so the symbol sits in relief rather than being painted on. The ground behind it is worked in grey, oxide red, ochre and gold, scored and stamped with marks that read as writing without being any alphabet in particular. Two raffia triangles anchor opposite corners. The whole surface carries texture you can see from across a room and feel up close, which is the thing a print of it could never do. At 90 x 90cm square this is a single wall piece rather than one of a group. It wants space around it: above a sideboard, at the end of a hallway, in a stairwell, or opposite a door where you meet it as you walk in. Supplied framed in a natural wood frame, as photographed. One of one. There is no edition and no print run behind it, and once it sells there is not another. The second photograph shows the work on the easel in the studio where it was made, which gives a truer sense of the depth of the rope than a flat photograph can. Care: hang it out of direct sunlight, which fades acrylic and yellows natural raffia over time. Dust the rope with a dry soft brush rather than a cloth, which snags on the fibres. Never use water or cleaning spray on the surface.

Buying guide
Most paintings on Sokofa are originals rather than editions, which means there is exactly one of each and it is gone when it sells. Listings state the medium, usually acrylic or oil on canvas, and the dimensions. Read those dimensions against your wall before falling for a photograph: a piece that looks intimate on a phone screen is often a metre across.
Prices reflect what the work is. An original painting by a named artist costs more than a signed limited-edition print, and a print costs more than an open unsigned reproduction. Each is a legitimate way to buy art, but they are not the same thing, and the listing tells you which one you are looking at.
Larger canvases sometimes ship rolled in a tube rather than stretched, which keeps them safe in transit and makes framing a local job at the other end. Every artwork is reviewed before it is listed, and if a piece arrives damaged, wrong or not as described, report it within 48 hours of delivery.

Common questions
Sokofa (sokofa.com) sells original paintings directly from African artists, mostly in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. Each listing names the artist, states the medium and dimensions, and orders ship worldwide with the delivery cost shown at checkout before you pay.
An original is the one painting the artist made, so only one exists. A limited-edition print is one of a numbered, usually signed run reproduced from the original. An open print has no fixed run. The product page states which you are buying.
Smaller works ship stretched and boxed. Larger canvases are often rolled in a tube, which protects them in transit and lets you stretch or frame the piece locally. Delivery cost for your address is confirmed at checkout.
Every artwork is reviewed before it is listed, and each product page names the artist and their country. What you buy is made by the person named on the listing, not a reseller of factory reproductions.
