A fusion of paint and raffia, this portrait explores the layers that shape who we are. The woven raffia reaches past representation into heritage, resilience and the stories carried down through generations. The wrap it forms is the duku, the Akan word for the scarf Ghanaian women tie for church, for funerals and for celebration, worn plain or built high depending on the day. Making it out of rope rather than paint puts the most ordinary thing a woman wears at the centre of the picture.

Product description
Overview
An original mixed media portrait on canvas, 60 x 80cm. The head wrap is built from coiled raffia rope worked onto the surface, and the face beneath it is painted in acrylic greys. Everything around the face is colour: a red jacket with pink spots, a white collar, and a background of panels in black, ochre and red carrying hand painted symbols in white and gold. Fragments of newsprint are collaged into the surface and left showing through the paint. It is signed Nanakay at the lower left and dated 2026, and it comes in the light wood frame shown in the photograph. This is a one off piece rather than a print, so once it goes it cannot be made again.
