This is an original hand painted work, so the brushwork and surface texture are unique to this canvas and cannot be repeated. Colours can look slightly different from one screen to another. The artist has not stated whether the painting ships framed or unframed, so please ask us before ordering if that matters to you.
Carrying a baby on the back, held in place by a cloth tied across the chest, is ordinary daily life across West Africa and it leaves both of the mother's hands free for work. The artist has painted that moment rather than a posed portrait, and describes the mother's hair as a nod to Ghanaian mothers. We have left the meaning of the piece to him rather than invent one for it.

Mother and Son is an original acrylic painting on canvas, 13 by 20 inches, showing a young mother in profile with her child carried on her back. She is painted in broad flat strokes of red, violet, green and pale gold, and the same colours run through the wall behind her, so the figures and the background are built from one palette rather than set apart. A single gold earring catches the light at her ear. The child is wrapped against her shoulder with only the top of the head showing, which is how the whole story of the painting is told in one small shape. This is the canvas itself, not a print or a reproduction. It is signed Lexis in the lower right corner and there is only one of it. The second photograph is a close view of the head and shoulders, where you can see the ridged paint and the dry scraped marks that a print can never give you. At 13 by 20 inches, roughly 33 by 51cm, it is a small painting that works best where people stand close to it, a hallway, a bedroom wall or a shelf where it can lean. Painted in acrylic on canvas. Keep it out of direct sunlight, dust it gently with a dry soft cloth, and never use cleaning fluid on the paint.
