Each elephant is carved by hand, so the grain, colour and carved detail differ a little from piece to piece and from the one photographed. The photographs are cut out on a white background, and photos 1 and 3 are the same picture. No size is published because the maker's figure does not match the photographs; please message the seller before buying if size matters to you. Screen colours vary.
Elephants are among Kenya's best loved animals, and carving the country's wildlife in wood is a living craft there, passed between carvers and sold across East Africa. This piece belongs to that tradition: a simple, sturdy animal figure made to be handled and kept.

A hand carved wooden elephant with a polished, reddish brown finish. The elephant stands mid stride with its trunk hanging low, the ears carved in deep sweeping lines and the trunk cut with rows of small ridges. The tail curves away from the body as a separate loop of wood, and each foot is finished with carved toe detail. The figure is carved from a single piece of wood, and the grain runs in bands across the back and flanks, so the wood itself does much of the decorating. It suits a shelf, a desk or a mantelpiece, and makes a good gift for anyone who loves elephants or Kenyan craft. Care: dust with a soft dry cloth. Keep out of direct sun and away from damp, and do not soak or wash.
