Cultural context & artisan story

In East African beadwork the colours are chosen, not incidental. Glass seed beads reached the region along the nineteenth century trade routes and took the place of the dried seeds and shells used before them, but the craft of threading them by hand, one row at a time, is much older than the beads themselves.

Product description

Overview

Handmade tan leather flat sandals with a wide black and white beaded ankle cuff and a toe strap of beaded medallions in the same monochrome pattern. Black and white is the beaded sandal that behaves like a neutral. It carries the handmade detail and the pattern without committing to a colour, so it sits with everything in the way a bright pair cannot, which makes it the sensible first beaded pair to own. The ankle cuff is a broad panel of fine seed beads in a bold geometric black and white pattern, and the toe strap steps down in beaded medallions to a leather post. The footbed is tan leather with a stitched edge. Every bead is threaded and stitched by hand. Wipe the leather with a dry cloth, keep the beads away from perfume, and store the pair flat so the cuff holds its shape.
