Cultural context & artisan story
In East African beadwork the colours are chosen, not incidental. Glass seed beads reached the region along the nineteenth century trade routes and took the place of the dried seeds and shells used before them, but the craft of threading them by hand, one row at a time, is much older than the beads themselves.

Product description
Overview
Handmade flat sandals with a wide beaded ankle cuff and a toe strap of round medallions, worked in green, yellow, purple and white glass seed beads on a black sole. If your summer wardrobe is mostly plain, this is the pair that adds the colour for you. The four bead colours mean it picks up almost anything, so one pair earns its place next to several outfits rather than waiting for the one it matches. The ankle cuff is a broad panel of fine seed beads in curved rows, and the toe strap steps down in three beaded medallions to the post. The sole and straps are leather. All of it is threaded and stitched by hand, row by row. Wipe the leather with a dry cloth, keep the beads away from perfume, and store the pair flat so the cuff holds its shape.
