Cultural context & artisan story
Red, gold and green with a black star are the colours of Ghana's flag, adopted at independence in 1957 and borrowed from Ethiopia's. Because Ghana was the first colony south of the Sahara to win independence, other new nations took up the same colours, and they are now read across Africa and in reggae culture as the Pan African colours.

Overview
Three small coconut shell pouches on cords, worn as necklaces, from Ghana. Each pouch is a hollowed coconut shell painted in bands of red, yellow, green and black, with a zip set between the shell and its lid and a black cord to hang it round your neck. It is a pendant and a pocket at once: big enough for coins, a key, earplugs or a lip balm at a festival or on the beach, and small enough to forget you are wearing it. The three in the photographs are lettered UNITE, ROOT and AFRICA. They are made by Ancient Culture, a Ghanaian artisan partner of Unite Root Africa in Nsawam. The set is assorted, so the lettering and the order of the colour bands on yours may differ from the photographs.
