Please note

Each piece is handmade in Ghana, so bead placement, cowrie placement and wood grain vary slightly and no two maps are identical. Cowries are natural shells, so size and marking differ from one to the next. Colours may look different on screen. A hanging hook is fitted at the back. The second photograph shows the plain carved back and the hanging hook, and it is the same construction across this maker's range rather than a picture of this map in particular.

Cultural context & artisan story

The red, black and green flag was adopted in New York in August 1920 by the Universal Negro Improvement Association, led by Marcus Garvey, as a flag for people of African descent everywhere. It was a direct answer to a popular song of the day that mocked Black people for having no flag of their own. The colours are usually read as the blood that unites the people, the people themselves, and the land. The cowrie shells around the border carry their own history: they were money across West Africa for centuries and still stand for wealth in Ghanaian work. The map is carved and beaded by hand in Accra, Ghana.

Product description

Overview

A hand carved Africa map in sese wood, beaded in the red, black and green of the Pan African flag, with a full border of real cowrie shells. The three bands run across the continent rather than sitting beside it, so the flag and the map are one object instead of a flag with a map on top. That makes it the piece in this maker's range to choose if you want the meaning to carry from across the room, and the cowrie border gives it enough depth to work in a hallway you pass closely as well. The continent is cut from sese wood, a light Ghanaian hardwood that carvers also use for drums, then beaded bead by bead in three blocks of red, black and green. Whole cowrie shells are set one by one around the entire coastline. The back is left as plain stained wood with a hanging hook fitted, so it goes straight onto a nail or a picture hook with nothing else needed. It measures about 28cm tall and 21cm wide. Dust it with a dry soft brush or a cloth. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades glass beads over time, and off a damp wall.
