I have always found the humble pencil to be a miraculous instrument. Since I was a child, I’ve been compelled by the way a single shade of lead or charcoal can breathe life onto a page, creating an illusion of color and 'aliveness' that a photograph simply cannot capture. My journey began with a curiosity not just for how a face looks, but for the inner essence it holds. When I sit with a subject, I am listening and not just merely drawing. I visually dissect every feature from the rhythm of a wrinkle to the stories within the eyes, studying them as pieces of a puzzle before putting them back together. I choose to work slowly, spending weeks or months on a single portrait, because that time is a meditation. It is in this stillness that the spirit of the sitter truly surfaces. Being rooted in my African heritage deeply informs this process. It pushes me to explore our shared human origin and the narratives of identity and ancestry. For me, every shading is an act of love. I see each artwork as a quiet, eternal conversation between the past and the present, an invitation for the viewer to slow down and truly see the beauty in our lived reality.
